Total Dengue Cases rate in the Region VIII decreased from a high of 5227 people affected with dengue from the year 2014 to 827 people affected in the year 2015, or a decline of 4400 affected of dengue virus in the past 8 months.
The Department of Science and Technology in coordination with the Department of Education continued the implementation of the “Nationwide Dengue Vector Surveillance Project only up to January 2015. However, because of the big impact to the schools, local leaders and the community especially on the warning for possible dengue outbreak, the project was extended starting February 2015 with a new title “Sustained Nationwide Dengue Vector Surveillance Project” The DOST8 then conducted series of project orientation to the DepEd Regional Coordiantor, Division Coordinators, Principals and School Coordinators per province on the last week of May before the school year opened. This orientation served as refresher to other teachers/coordinators who were already involved in the earlier project.
2015 Regional Health Research Symposium
Guided by ths year's theme "People at the Center of Health Research and Innovation", the Department of Science and Technology Region VIII and the Department of Health Region VIII through the Eastern Visayas Health Research and Development Consortium (EVHRDC) conducted the 2015 Regional Health Research Symposium at Sabin Resort Hotel, Ormoc City, Leyte on June 23-24, 2015. The symposium is designed to create an avenue for the dissemination of information on health researches conducted for professionals and students from its member institutions. The symposium had two contests; the Poster Exhibit and the Oral Presentation contests and categorized into the professional and the student categories. This year, there are 4 entries under the Oral Presentation; 6 entries for the Poster Exhibit under the professional category; and 6 entries made it to the finals in the Poster Exhibit under the student category, who vied for the coveted Outstanding Health Research in Region VIII.
