16th PNHRS 2023 HIGHLIGHTS
16th PNHRS Teaser

The Ovicidal-Larvacidal OL Trap, which was designed and developed by the DOST-Industrial Technology and Development Institute (DOST-ITDI) in 2010, aims to fight dengue by decreasing population of the dengue vector itself, thus lowering the disease incidence especially among school children.

Since 2011, the OL trap has been distributed nationwide through the DOST Regional Offices under the Nationwide Dengue Vector Surveillance Program.

The Department of Science and Technology Regional Office VIII continued the implementation of the project entitled “Sustained Nationwide Dengue Vector Surveillance Program” for CY 2016. In the Region 8, dengue incidents had increased due to the onslaught of Typhoon NONA last December 15, 2015. The Tropical Storm Typhoon Nona created widespread damages to agriculture and structures specially over Northern Samar where it made landfall due to strong winds according to the PAGASA and leaving patches of clean water paddles which seemed this brought as the breeding sites for Aedes mosquito the dengue virus vector.

About 574 dengue cases recorded from January to March 7 2016 as recorded by the DOH.

Upon knowing the OVI Index, in the NDVSP website, it was observed that reported OVI Index (an indicator of the Aedes population has surpassed the 20% level for the month of January to March 7 2016, in the provinces of Northern Samar, Samar, Leyte and Southern Leyte. This OVI index is reported by elementary/high school teachers as gathered from the O/L trap installed in their classrooms.

The DOST VIII would immediately call the attention of the Regional and Division Coordinators from DepEd and DOH to have a close monitoring of the sentinel sites with high OV index result from the website to take the necessary actions and conduct dengue prevention and control activities. With the end of the DOST project- April 2016, it is hoped that LGU’s w/ DepEd would support the program and continue its implementation in their locality.
